The City of Vermilion Police Department is reminding residents of parking regulations within the City of Vermilion.
This is a brief list of the most common parking violations that Vermilion Officers issue warnings or parking tickets for:
There is no parking in the downtown area in locations that have a painted yellow curb, or a sign indicating No Parking, or in an area that is marked off with diagonal white stripes.
There is no parking allowed on the fire hydrant side of curbed streets in residential areas. (Ord. 2014-50. Passed 10-27-14.)
(1) On a sidewalk, curb or street lawn area, except a bicycle;
(2) In front of a public or private driveway;
(3) Within an intersection;
(4) Within ten feet of a fire hydrant;
(5) On a crosswalk;
(6) Within twenty feet of a crosswalk at an intersection
There is no parking in a designated fire lane, this includes the areas around the schools; i.e. behind Sailorway Middle School.
There is no parking on Sailorway Drive from Douglas St. to Sanford St. There are numerous signs indicating this and Vermilion places temporary Police Order no parking signs up during school events to try to avoid violations.
Handicap Parking violations - The involved vehicle must have a handicap placard visible or handicap license plates to park in a designated handicap parking spot.
A vehicle cannot be parked in reverse of the flow of traffic on the road, i.e. parking with the driver's side to the curb.
There is no parking on curb-less streets city wide; this includes the VOL neighborhood. There is not enough space on these roads to allow for on-street parking and still allow room for large safety vehicles to pass (fire trucks, ambulance).
There is no parking in front yards; you cannot park your vehicle in your front yard.
The Winter Overnight Parking Ban is in effect from December 1st - March 31st.
Contact the VPD if you have any questions. There is a complete list of the City of Vermilion Parking Ordinances in Chapter 452 of the Traffic Code.
